Brighton & Hove City Council partnered with Community Works to create a single website for all volunteering opportunities across the city.

At the same time, it deployed two admin tools to:

  • broker volunteers and opportunities (used by Community Works)
  • manage council volunteers (used by Brighton & Hove City Council)

The team used off the shelf solutions provided by Volunteer Plus for the former, and worked with the Volunteer Plus team on a bespoke build for the latter.

Much of the service is already live, with some management tools (such as rota-ing of volunteers) in Beta.

Further work will include:

  • client matching (for services where volunteers help a specific person)
  • training tracker (so it's easy to see at a glance which volunteers have been trained, and the extra training that should be provided)
  • self serve (so volunteers can sign up for rotas, file expenses, check in etc)

The bespoke work was built using methods described in the Digital Service Standard, although the project has not been assessed.
